Paul Sanga Finds Love In The MPBL

Paul Sanga on MPBL

Paul Sanga has not won yet a Championship ring in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) but he will soon get a more important one- a wedding ring.

The 33-year old sniper is set to marry her fiance, Ms. Kryzler Kate Yebra, this coming December barring any further extension of the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ). It will be an exciting new chapter for the couple who started dating sometime in 2018.

How did the two end up together? It was rather unexpected. They were schoolmates back in the Far Eastern University (FEU) but were not close. It didn't help that Kate was not into basketball players as she thinks they are just fooling around.

"Schoolmate ko siya sa FEU but we're not that close. But time comes  sa Facebook nakita ko mga pictures niya tapos nili-like ko lang then nagli-like din siya ng few pics ko. Tapos na timingan ko na single siya noong 2018 then I wave sa messenger niya.  Actually hindi niya ako type noon kasi basketball player daw ako, said Paul Sanga in a chat interview with Ligang Pinoy ."

One thing led to another. Paul Sanga invited Kate to watch MPBL games which turned out to be effective as the two eventually became compatible to each other. They eventually became official on October 20, 2018.

"Ini-invite ko siya sa mga games sa MPBL then ayun parang naging compatible naman kami. As in almost lahat ng bagay napagkasunduan namin, expressed Paul Sanga."

Paul Sanga felt the all-out support given by her significant other on his chosen career. Without hesitation, he bent his knee and popped the question before her soon-to-be bride. Of course, she said "yes!".

"Nakita ko siya na kung paano niya ako suportahan sa career ko and ganun din naman ako sa kanya. January 20, 2020 engagement date namin. Simple proposal lang ginawa ko sa bahay nila after namin mag dinner. And now we are pushing ourself up para sa future namen. And speaking of future, we are getting married sa December, shared Paul Sanga."

Indeed, the future looks bright for Paul Sanga. The three-point specialist is set to take his talent to the rebuilding Sarangani Marlins which owned the worst record of 1-29 last season. It will surely be a challenge to turn things around in Sarangani not just for him but for the other players who were signed up by the Marlins. Even then, Paul Sanga is excited to bring his vast basketball experience and leadership to his new team.

"Siguro kung ano yung ginawa ko sa Caloocan like being a leader and pagiging coachable. Siguro sa offense din. We all know na worst record yung Sarangani last season so plano namin baliktarin yun at magbalik ang tiwala ng mga Sarangani sa kayang ibigay ng team this coming season. Pero wala naman pressure, all to gain naman,  answered Paul Sanga when asked on what his contribution will be to his new team."

In Sarangani, Paul Sanga will join fellow ex-pros Marvin Hayes and Chico Lanete. With him on board, the Marlins will have a legitimate threat on the perimeter as he is known as a streaky shooter. Paul Sanga can light it up from beyond the arc. Moreover, his leadership will be valuable.

Paul Sanga is not a stranger in leading a team. In fact, the reason why he was discovered by the FEU Tamaraws was due to his exploits during intramurals and intra-institute basketball tournaments where he usually won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award.

"I started playing sa inter-department and inter-institute intrams tapos both tournament I got the MVP award. Then na scout na ako ng coaches kaya pinasabay ako sa practice ng FEU team B then na activate sa Team A, professed Paul Sanga."

He made his debut in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) on 2007 and played until the 2010 season. Unfortunately for him, he played at a time when the Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) ruled the UAAP seniors basketball  tournament  with a 5-peat championship from 2008 to 2012.

After his collegiate years, he moved to the PBA D-league to hone his skills but he suffered a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) which delayed his entry into the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Draft. He subsequently declared for the 2013 PBA Draft after recovering from his injury but was undrafted.

Lady luck, however, was on his side after he was signed on 2014 by the KIA Motors which was an expansion franchise at that time. Sadly, his PBA stint didn't last long as he found himself relegated to the PBA D-League once again.

"Huwag na huwag kang makokontento sa kakayanan mo.  Everyday at every game, dapat may lesson ka na natututunan. At yung mga positive na nagagawa mo, ipagpatuloy mo. Tapos yung mga lapses and mistakes na nangyari kailangan matutunan at pag-aralan paano magiging tama, realized Paul Sanga after he was cut from his PBA team."

Without a doubt, the PBA's loss is MPBL's gain. Paul Sanga tried out for the Caloocan Supremos who gladly accepted and gave him a significant role. In his two (2) playing years in Caloocan since the Datu Cup, the 6'4 wingman became a licensed shooter for the John Kallos-coached Supremos.

"Nag-tryout ako sa Caloocan tapos nagustuhan ako nila coach John kaya I've played there for two (2) years."

Make no mistake though. Paul Sanga was not simply given the green light to shoot, he had to earn it. Thus, he worked on his game before and after his team's practice to keep his shooting ability in top form.

"Before and after practice, nage-extra shooting ako and yung mga na-miss shot ko sa game binabalikan ko para itama. Mag-shooting ng mag-shooting hanggang sa mapagod kasi minsan pag pagod ka na mas mahirap na i-shoot kaya mas maganda masanay na pagod ka para alam mo na kung paano tumira, he explained."

Only time will tell if Paul Sanga can make a difference in a Sarangani Marlins uniform. Truth be told, he definitely can't carry the the team on his own so he will need the best help he can get, especially since the MPBL is getting more and more competitive each season.

While winning  a Championship ring is  uncertain, one thing is sure. Paul Sanga will get his wedding ring soon.
