MPBL Prospect: Joshua Lazaro

MPBL Prospect Joshua Lazaro

Joshua Rafael Lazaro has steadily built a reputation as one of Philippine basketball’s most versatile forwards, carving out a journey defined by growth, discipline, and winning pedigree. Standing at 6-foot-5, Lazaro combines size, athleticism, and defensive instincts—traits that have allowed him to thrive at every level he has played.

Born on June 11, 2002, and hailing from Taytay, Rizal, Lazaro’s basketball roots were forged early. Now 23 years old, he continues to develop into a modern forward capable of impacting the game on both ends of the floor.

Lazaro began making noise in the NCAA Juniors division with the San Beda Red Cubs, where his fundamentals and motor quickly stood out. After transferring from San Beda Taytay, he took his talents to the Ateneo Blue Eaglets in the UAAP Juniors, a move that proved pivotal for his career.

In his first year with the Blue Eaglets, the athletic winger delivered eye-catching numbers, averaging 13.2 points, 12.8 rebounds, 1.93 assists, 1.47 steals, and 1.33 blocks per game. His all-around production highlighted not only his scoring ability but also his rebounding tenacity and defensive impact—key traits that would define his game moving forward.

Lazaro’s talent did not go unnoticed on the national stage. He suited up for the Gilas Youth program, representing the Philippines in major international competitions. He was part of the national team that competed in the 2017 FIBA Under-16 Asia Cup and the 2018 FIBA Under-17 World Cup, gaining invaluable experience against elite global competition at a young age.

Transitioning to the collegiate level, Lazaro continued his ascent with Ateneo de Manila University, suiting up in multiple competitive platforms including the Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup and the Pinoyliga Cup. His steady development earned him a role with the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the UAAP, where he became part of the team that captured the UAAP Season 85 championship.

Lazaro also represented Ateneo on the international stage, competing in the World University Basketball Series in Japan and later in AsiaBasket, further expanding his experience and exposure.

Primarily playing the forward position, Lazaro’s game is anchored on versatility. He rebounds aggressively, defends multiple positions, and contributes without needing the spotlight. As he continues his basketball journey, Joshua Rafael Lazaro remains a testament to patient development—proof that consistent work, combined with the right opportunities, can produce a winning player at the highest levels of Philippine basketball.
