MPBL 2019 Off-season Player Transfers Tracker

MPBL free agents
(Last update: 07 June 2019)

Out of the 26 teams who participated in the Datu Cup of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League,  only two (2) teams are left so far battling for the crown. The season is yet to end but the other teams are already making serious moves to beef up their line up.

We track the player signings below:

BACOOR CITY STIKERS

The Strikers won 13 games in 25 outings to take the 5th spot after the single round robin elimination round. In their first round match up in the playoffs, they stunned the fourth seeded General Santos City Warriors en route to the South Division Semifinals.

But that was how far they were able to go since they were eventually swept by the Davao Occidental Tigers in their best-of-three series.

Gab Banal is definitely their main man,  but he certainly needs all the help he can get. Fortunately for him,  help is coming as the Strikers splashed on acquiring all star players to support their franchise player who expressed desire to stay with the Strikers for another season.

ZAMBOANGA FAMILY'S BRAND SARDINES

As one of the 16 expansion teams in the second season,  Zamboanga had a rough start in the MPBL Datu cup. The team was headed to an early exit but a change in management prompted a total revamp of its roster. The roster change proves to be a success as the team slowly racked up wins to turn  their fortunes for the better.

During their mid-season retooling, they were able to sign up Robin Rono,  Harold Arboleda,  Joseph Nalos,  and Ivan Villanueva as soon as they were released by their mother clubs. And with the return of Reed Juntilla,  these players surprised everyone by upsetting the Muntinlupa Cagers in the first round of the playoffs. Their inspiring cinderella run came to an end when they bowed out against the defending champions Batangas City in the South Division semis.

As it stands,  their mission is not over yet until they win the championship trophy. To this end,  they are hell-bent on improving their team by actively signing up crucial pieces.

BASILAN STEEL

The Basilan Steel is one of the four expansion teams from Mindanao together with Zamboanga City,  General Santos City,  and Davao Occidental. But unlike its neighbors,  Basilan Steel was the only team from Mindanao who didn't reach the playoff stage.

The Steel was only able to win seven (7) out of 25 elimination games.  At a win-loss record of 7-18, they were tied with  the lowly Rizal Crusaders for the worst record in the South Division. While the record was disappointing,  it could have actually been better had they won several close games where they lost by a point or two.

As many people say,  a setback is a set up for a comeback.  So don't take them lightly in the upcoming season because they are determined more than ever to improve as evidenced  by their recent signing of notable recruits.

CALOOCAN SUPREMOS

Caloocan was among the cellar dwellers at the early part of the season.  They somehow managed to climb the standings largely due to the arrival of Almond Vosotros whose leadership provided spark and guidance to the team's young core.

The Supremos barely made it to the playoffs by clinching the eight and final spot in  top North Division. They were,  however,  no match to the deeper talent pool of the Bataan Risers during their first round playoff series.

As they want to avoid another very early exit in the playoffs race,  they are now on the process of securing vital pieces that can help Almond Vosotros carry the team further into the playoffs.

MANILA STARS

The Manila Stars is definitely one of the teams heavily loaded with talented players led by ex-pros such as Marvin Hayes,  Roger Yap,  Reil Cervantes, and Marcy Arellano. They also had two talented young guns in Aris Dionisio and Chris Bitoon.

Unfortunately, they were eliminated by another talent-laden team in the San Juan Knights via  a thrilling North Division Finals series,  2-1.

With Dionisio and Bitoon staying for another season,  the Manila Stars are not done retooling as they sign up more talent for their championship quest.

BATAAN RISERS

The Bataan Risers were the hottest squad in the Elimination round of the Datu Cup. While they lost in their very first game against the Manila Stars, they won their next 14 games which remained a league record until it was eventually surpassed by  the Makati Supercrunch team.

Given their spectacular rise in the standings, the Risers were the heavy favorites to win the championship or to at least set foot in the National Finals. But in spite of their top seeding, they failed to rise beyond the second round of the Playoffs. While they easily dispatched the Caloocan Supremos in the first round, they succumbed to their tormentor, the Manila Stars, in the North Division Semi-finals. Incidentally, the Manila Stars was the team that gave them their very first loss in the season.

The Bataan Risers are now ready to leave behind their frustrations. In their bid to comeback stronger and tougher, they are in the process of rebuilding with the acquisition of talents across all ages and leagues.

PAMPANGA LANTERNS

The province of Pampanga is a well known hotbed of basketball talents. It has produced outstanding basketball talents that are currently making a mark in the Philippine Basketball Association. They include Jayson Castro,  Calvin Abueva,  Arwind Santos,  and Ian Sangalang among others.

The Lanterns,  however,  failed to reach the playoff stage despite a explosive scoring season for Michael Juico who ranked first in the league in average scoring. They managed to earn a 11-14 win/loss record and actually tied with the Caloocan Supremos for the eight and final spot in the North Division.  But because of the win-over-the-other rule,  the Supremos advanced into the knockout stage since they defeated the Lanterns in their elimination match.

The Lanterns are raring to come back stronger in the upcoming third season of the MPBL.  They are now on the move to acquire key pieces for their new campaign.

GENERAL SANTOS WARRIORS

The General Santos City Warriors is one of the surprising teams in the recently concluded second season of the MPBL. Even though they had a few ex-professional basketball players,  they made a good run to the playoffs round.

They finished the elimination round with a record of 14-11 which was enough to earn the fourth seed in the South Division. They were however swept by the Bacoor Strikers in their first round matchup in spite of their homecourt advantage.

The Warriors is a team primarily composed of local selections who distinguished themselves in the local leagues in General Santos City. They certainly over achieved in the Datu Cup but their depth was not just enough.  To remedy this, they are signing key players that can carry them deeper into the trophy rounds.

BULACAN KUYAS

The Bulacan Kuyas is one of the 10 pioneer teams of the MPBL. In the very first season, they were ranked second after the elimination round. They were nonetheless stunned by the Paranaque Patriots, 2-1 in their series; thus,  they were sent home early in the playoffs.

In the following season,  they achieved fifth place in the competitive North Division of The MPBL. But similar to their previous campaign,  they faltered right away. Their weaknesses were exposed as they were easily defeated by the much stronger and talented Manila Stars.

They are looking to change their fate this season. They have re-signed a number of their key players but they need to add more firepower.

MARIKINA SHOEMASTERS

The Marikina Shoemasters is one of the 16 expansion teams that joined the MPBL on its second season. Unfortunately, it was also one of the 10 teams that went on vacation early as they were eliminated in the elimination rounds.

The Shoemasters appeared to be a promising team early as they won their first game on the back of Yves Sazon's hot shooting.  Nevertheless, their luck faded out early as well as they struggled to pile up wins.  Their season ended with a record of 8-17 which is good enough for an 11th place finish.

They are now targeting to surpass their poor performance this season as they look forward to signing key players.

PASAY VOYAGERS

The Pasay Voyagers had one of the youngest core in the recently concluded season of the MPBL. But despite their youthful energy, they failed to advance into the playoffs round.

The Voyagers only managed to win eight (8) out of 25 games which is only good for 11th place in the very tough North Division. Perhaps such losing  record resulted from their lack of reliable veteran leaders. Without guidance from proven veterans,  the Voyagers lacked cohesion on both offensive and defensive ends.

They are now looking beyond their disappointing first season with the MPBL. They are now slowly acquiring notable talents for their redemption bid.

QUEZON CITY CAPITALS

The Quezon City Capitals were the dark horse of the competitive North Division. They actually started slow during the elimination round as they fell in the bottom of the team standing.  Nonetheless,  the team were able to regroup midway through the season and started piling up wins even against stronger teams.

They finished seventh (7th) place entering the playoffs and were matched up against the second (2nd) seeded Makati Supercrunch. Everybody thought that the Capitals will be dispatched easily by their opponent,  but they had a different plan on their mind.

The Capitals accomplished the impossible by sweeping the higher seeded Supercrunch, 2-0. They however bowed out of the playoffs against the eventual champions San Juan Knights.

Taking off from their successful run in the Datu Cup,  the Capitals are looking forward to a more fruitful conquest in the third season of the MPBL.

RIZAL CRUSADERS

As bad as it may sound,  the Rizal Crusaders were the whipping boys of the second season of the MPBL which just ended.  They only triumphed in seven (7) out of the 25 elimination games.

Nonetheless, their awful record does not give justice to their performance in the court. In too many games,  the crusaders played great basketball in the first three (3) quarters only to collapse in the crucial stretch of the game. Perhaps it could be attributed to the diminishing energy of their experienced veterans who do not have enough tank to cope with younger guys.

As a new season of the MPBL unfolds on June 2019, the Crusaders vow to turn their fortune around.  To ensure their crusade will succeed,  they are now making moves to retain their key players and to add crucial pieces.

MAKATI SUPERCRUNCH

The Makati Supercrunch was one of the most promising team in the later part of the second season of the MPBL. Even though the team was not loaded with many ex-pros,  they were able to make a record-breaking run with their cohesive team plays. They blitzed to a 15 game winning streak to end the elimination round.

With a 21-4 win-loss record,  Makati placed second (2nd) and was the heavy favorite to sweep the seventh (7th) seeded Quezon City Capitals. However,  lady luck was not on their side.

Without a real homecourt, the Supercrunch team had to play their home game in Ynares Arena, Pasig City. As it turned out,  the Capitals became the Kryptonite of the Suprecrunch as they swept Makati in two (2) games.

Given their disappointing finish to their maiden season, Makati hopes to bounce back stronger.

BATANGAS CITY ATHLETICS

The Batangas City Athletics made history when they brought home the championship trophy in the inaugural season of the MPBL which featured 10 pioneer teams. They,  however, failed to defend the crown as the field of competition grew from 10 teams to 26 squads.

The Athletics actually struggled to find their championship form in the early parts of the season as they lost more games. But with the arrival of Jeff Viernes and Bong Quinto, they picked up steam and started to pile up wins.

Midway through the season,  they lost three (3) of their key players when they were drafted into the PBA. The draftees included Teytey Teodoro,  Bong Quinto,  and Paul Varilla. Nonetheless, the Athletics managed to remain competitive as they managed to secure the second seed in the playoffs of the south division.

In the playoffs, the Athletics disposed Imus Banderas in a thrilling first round series, 2-1. Afterwards,  they were put with their backs on the wall by the Zamboanga Family Brand's Sardines tean but they managed to escaped with a 2-1 squeaker. In the South Division finals though,  they fell against the Davao Occidental Tigers in game 3 as well.

With a disappointing finish, the Athletics are retooling its roster with the aim of recapturing the crown.

IMUS BANDERAS

The Imus Banderas is the crosstown neighbor of the Bacoor Strikers. But unlike the Strikers who have been busy acquiring marquee players this postseason  as they rebuild their team,  the Banderas are silent on their retooling.

According to reports,  the Banderas will have a new management that will bankroll the team.  That's why several of its key players such as Ian Melencio,  Jom Sollano, Genmar Bragais, Winston Baltazar,  and Dan Alberto were released and transferred to other teams. Although the team reached the playoffs where they put up a good fight against the defending champions Batangas City Athletics,  they eventually bowed out of the competition given their lack of firepower.

But let's not count them out yet for the upcoming season.  Who knows they have something up their sleeves.

SAN JUAN KNIGHTS

The San Juan Knights are coming fresh from a Championship winning run in the Datu Cup but they have a tougher task this coming season as they try to defend their crown. Winning the title in the second season did not come as a surprise for the Knights since their team was one of the early favorites to win the title to begin with. The team featured reliable ex-pro veterans in Macmac Cardona, John Wilson, and Larry Rodriguez. They were also teeming with young talents such as Orlan Wamar, CJ Issit, Mike Ayonayon, and Aaron Jeruta.

Early in the season, the Knights bared their fangs by beating teams with winning margins of 20-plus points. Nonetheless, they did lose some games as they ended up securing the fourth seed in the competitive Northern Division. In the playoffs, they easily dispatched Navotas Clutch in the first round then whipped Quezon City Capitals in the second round. In the Northern Division Finals, they lost for the very first time in their home court during their game 1 encounter with Manila Stars which is also one of the talent-laden teams. But in spite of their temporary setback, they recovered their bearings and blasted the Stars for a spot in the National Championship.

Lady Luck smiled on the Knights during the Championship series as they were able to pull off a breathtaking escape as the nipped the Davao Occidental Tigers by one (1) point during the do-or-die Game 5. Call it luck but the Knights certainly deserved the crown.

But now that they are the team everybody wants to beat, the Knights must not rest on their laurels. According to reports, they have retained much of their core but they are still looking to add talents.

 BICOL VOLCANOES

The Bicol Volcanoes is one of the four expansion teams for the third (3rd) season of the MPBL that are hoping to make a great impression. Among the four new teams, the Volcanoes were the first to make known their intention to join the league. Immediately thereafter, they went to work by assembling a competitive squad.

They will rely on former ex-pros to lead their campaign. Making a comeback to competitive basketball, Ronjay Buenafe and Alex Nuyles who both played in the PBA will lead the maiden campaign of the Volcanoes. Supporting the two will be a squad composed of a mixture of young and veteran players.

The team will also have to rely on the support of all the Bicolanos. In fact, the team change its name just to accomodate the clamor of the loyal Bicolano basketball fans. Originally, the team was called Albay Volcanoes but due to insistent public demand, it was changed to Bicol Volcanoes.

In the 2015 census, there are roughly 5.8 million Bicolanos scattered all over the country. The Volcanoes will definitely feel the pressure of representing such a large population but they are well prepared for it. Let's see how far they can go this season.

LAGUNA HEROES

The Heroes didn't have a heroic ending to their season last year as what they have expected for. They only needed two (2) more wins to clinch the eight (8th) and final spot but their 10-15 win-loss mark was not enough to bump off the Cebu City Sharks for the said slot.

Riding largely on the back of veteran guard Denok Miranda, the Heroes started the season well as they appeared to be one of the strong contenders for at least a playoff finish. Denok was backstopped by ex-pro Jai Reyes, and together, their dynamic duo took care of the Heroes' backcourt as the team compiled wins. Unfortunately, Jai Reyes asked for a trade which was eventually  granted. In accordance to his wish, he was shipped to the Caloocan Supremos and finally to the Navotas Clutch.

Despite the departure of Reyes,  the Heroes remained competitive. As a testament to their resilience,  they managed to upset the Manila Stars who were the team-to-beat in the North Division that time, thanks largely to the emergence of Michael Mabulac as a consistent double-double machine. In the end though, they missed the playoffs by a hairline.

They are now working to turn around their franchise from a lackluster showing last season. From the ground up, they are on the process of accquiring players through a homegrown-first approach. Let's see if their method will payoff in the coming season.   Good luck to the team.

CEBU CITY SHARKS

The Cebu City Sharks were the lone expansion team from the Visayas last season. This might not be the case this coming third (3rd) season with the impending entry of a team from Iloilo. Notwithstanding the addition of another Visayan team, the Sharks are looking forward to improve from their 8th seed finish last season and a winless exit in the first round playoffs at the hands of the Davao Occidental Tigers.

Entering the playoffs last season was a consolation for the Sharks who were disorganized and dysfunctional in the early stages of the elimination round. They were the whipping boys early in the season as they suffered lopsided losses including an embarrassing one against the Manila Stars when they endured a scoreless first quarter and a 29-0 run by the Stars. Fortunately for them, they were able to regroup from such misery until they started to pile up enough wins to secure the eight (8th) seed in the South Division.

The sharks are now re-tooling their squad with the help of college standouts from the Visayas. Some of its core will also stay hoping to carry the team further into the playoffs round.

MINDORO TAMARAWS

The Mindoro Tamaraws are looking to barge into the MPBL on a high note although such feat would be a tall order. As the team's participation in the fast-growing MPBL was just announced few weeks ago,  they have been scrambling to assemble a competitive team by holding tryouts in Mindoro and Metro Manila to scout their hometown basketball heroes.

While they haven't publicized yet any marquee player who will shore up their team, there was no shortage of local talents who can help the team make an impact on what's shaping to be a very competitive season of the MPBL. Let's watch out for these kids.

NUEVA ECIJA MIGUARDS

Nueva Ecija is making a return into the regional basketball league scene. For those who were not born yet, the Nueva Ecija Patriots competed in the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) from 1999 to 2001. Fortunately for Nueva Ecija, Christian Singson who previously owned the Mandaluyong El Tigre franchise is now rekindling the passion of Novo Ecijanos towards basketball.

Supported by Miguard, the new team from Central Luzon region is ready to battle in the hard court against well-organized and already established teams. Similar to the Mindoro Tamaraws, the team also held tryouts in the previous weeks to select the cagers who are worthy of carrying the province of Nueva Ecija. So far, we note some familiar names who are taking their talents to the rice granary of Luzon.

ILOILO UNITED ROYALS

Aside from Nueva Ecija, Iloilo is another province formerly represented in the MBA that is now making a comeback to the national basketball scene.  In a signing ceremony held last Thursday night (30 May 2019), the participation of Iloilo became official after its owner,  Mr. JJ Javelosa, signed the franchise agreement with the MPBL represented by founder Manny Pacquiao and Commissioner Kenneth Duremdes.

The team will carry the monicker United Royals since they will be playing for the entire province of Iloilo and not just Iloilo City. With a population of close to 1.9 million people as of 2015, the province of Iloilo does not have shortage of basketball talents.  In fact, Iloilo produced a number of notable players who are making a name for themselves in the PBA. James Yap, Jericho Cruz, Emman Monfort, Ronald Tubid, and Kiefer Ravena are just a few of the recognizable basketball celebrities from Iloilo.

VALENZUELA CLASSIC
The Valenzuela Classic is one of the 10 pioneering teams in the MPBL but they still have to find success yet. While the team entered the playoff round of the inaugural season as the fourth seed, they failed to advance deep into the championship round.

Worse, the Classics even failed to reach the playoffs in the just concluded Datu Cup after winning only 10 out of 25 games. Their season was so turbulent that they have to change their head coach thrice.

They need to bury the hatchet moving forward and focus on the upcoming task at hand if they want to have a shot at redemption.  With a new principal sponsor, things are looking bright for the V-Nation.

DAVAO OCCIDENTAL TIGERS

The Davao Occidental Tigers lost the MPBL Championship trophy by a hairline against the San Juan Knights. In what turned out to be a heartbreaking defeat on their own home court, the Tigers let the trophy slipped their hands when the Knights pulled off an 87-86 escape.

Inspite of their sorry loss in the final game,  the team still consider it as an achievement to even reach the finals.  They were not supposed to go deep into the playoffs, much less the finals,  considering that the team was hastily formed just a few months before the Datu Cup started.

Looking ahead,  the Tigers are now ready to close that painful chapter behind as they now put their sight on finally capturing the ultimate price for the third season of the MPBL. They have retained most of their core intact while adding key pieces who will contribute for their title quest.

MUNTINLUPA CAGERS

Following a heartbreaking loss to the inaugural Champions Batangas City Athletics during the finals series of the very first MPBL season,  the Muntinlupa Cagers appeared to be a strong contender in winning the Championship for the second season as they started the season with a spotless 7-0 record. With their eyes set on the prize, the team's management eventually  brought on board top collegiate coach Aldin Ayo to bolster their chances of winning the crown.

Such move, however,  turned out to be a disaster. Playing on a new system, the Cagers struggled in the mid-season as they failed to embrace the mayhem system. Consequently  Coach Ayo was silently replaced.

Although the Cagers managed to land in third place of the South Division, their season turned out still as a disappointment. They were stunned by the sixth seeded Zamboanga Family's Brand Sardines despite holding a twice-to-beat advantage in a hotly contested series.
