ABOUT SIQUIJOR PROVINCE
Siquijor is considered as the smallest among the four (4) provinces in the Central Visayas region. According to legend, Siquijor rose from the sea during a thunder and lightning storm. This folklore is supported by the fact that many fossils and remains of sea creatures such as clams were found even in the elevated part of Siquijor island.
Siquijor's native name was Katugasan derived from "tugas" which is the local term for Molave trees that thrived in the hills of Siquijor. It was the Spaniards who called Siquijor as "Isla Del Fuego" or the island of fire due to the abundance of fireflies that swarmed the trees in the island when the Spaniards arrived.
Many believe that Siquijor's present name was derived from King Kihod who was the island's legendary ruler. Others say that Siquijor came from "quipjod", a native term to describe the ebbing of the tide. The name "Siquijod" evolved over time until the "d" was changed to "r" for Spanish euphony.
Siquijor was under the ecclesiastical authorities in Cebu from 1683 until the end of the Spanish occupation, For some time, it was administered politically by Bohol. It became a sub-province of Negros Oriental in 1901 until it was later constituted as a separate province in September 17, 1971.
Larena, the ecclesiastical and trading center, was the capital of the island until 1972. A proclamation was later made and the capital was transferred to the town of Siquijor.
