The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) reached a new milestone on August 21, 2023 as its Facebook Page garnered 900,000 followers and counting as of this writing. Starting in 2018, the MPBL quickly gained popularity as it featured a semi home-and-away format which distinguished it from the PBA.
The Facebook page of the MPBL was actually deleted when it had around 300,000 followers due to some technical issues. The league had no choice but to create a new page which now has 900,000 followers.
With the rate the MPBL'S Facebook page has been growing in the past months, it is very much possible that it will gain One (1) million followers by the end of the season. This is a testament to the growing popularity of the MPBL which offers a breath of fresh air in the Philippine basketball scene.
From 10 teams in its inaugural season, the league grew to 26 teams in the 2018-2019 season or the Datu Cup. It grew further to 31 teams in the Lakan Cup or 2019-2020 season which was interrupted by the Covid Pandemic in March 2020.
