Born on 22 March 2000, the Fil-Australian shooter made his rookie debut with the UP Fighting Maroons in Season 81 (2018). After a heartbreaking loss in the semi-finals of UAAP Season 82 (2019) against the UST Growling Tigers when his potential game-tying triple rimmed out, James Spencer finally won the championship in UAAP Season 84.

In his debut for 2022 UAAP Season 85 on 01 October 2022, James Spencer scored 8 points while grabbing 4 rebounds, dishing 2 assists and stealing 2 possessions in a win against the DLSU Green Archers. He followed it up with 8 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists versus the Adamson Soaring Falcons on 05 October 2022.
James Spencer, however, was held scoreless against the FEU Tamaraws on 08 October 2022, although he contributed 2 rebounds and 2 assists. He had limited production again versus the the NU Bulldogs as he only managed to register 1 point, 2 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.
