Shaquille Imperial is a professional basketball player of the KCS Mandaue Computer Specialists team in the Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup. A 5'10 guard coming from the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI), Shaquille Imperial became a key player for Mandaue as his team emerged as the inaugural champion of the Visayas leg of the VisMin Super Cup.
Prior to joining the VisMin Super Cup, Shaquille Imperial led the SWU Cobras in the 2019 season to their first CESAFI championship since 2014. He also won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award during his championship run with the Cobras.
As the 2020 season of the CESAFI was cancelled due to the pandemic, Shaquille Imperial's plans changed. When coach Mike Reyes of SWU called him if he is available to participate in the VisMin cup which is the newest professional basketball league in the Philippines, Shaquille Imperial readily grabbed the opportunity.
"Tinawagan ako ni coach Mike if bakante ako para mag laro sa mandaue KCS para sa Vismin Super Cup. Sabi ko, 'lage akong bakante pag dating sayo coach'. And nagpakundisyon ako kasi nga iba yung pro sa college na liga.Karamihan nun ex pros so expected maraming magagaling at mahuhusay na players," explained Shaquille Imperial.
His decision proved to be the right one as Shaquille Imperial captured another Championship Trophy. What makes it sweeter is that he is already a champion in both collegiate and professional basketball leagues.
"First sobrang ibang feeling makapag laro sa VisMin Super Cup compared sa collegiate na liga kasi . Both liga nag- champion ako so sobrang thankful ako doon," exclaimed Shaquille Imperial.
Their mission is not yet over though as Mandaue will still need to face the champion of the Mindanao Leg which is tentatively set to open on May 30, 2021 in Dipolog City. It could be a tough challenge for Mandaue as the Mindanao-based teams including Basilan, Ozamiz, Roxas, Pagadian, and Zamboanga City have all recruited ex-professionals and Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) standouts to beef up their teams.
For instance, current MPBL MVP John Wilson will suit up for Ozamiz. Several ex-PBA players will likewise join the fray including JK Casino, Mac Mac Cardona, Chito Jaime, Chris Bitoon, and Michael Juico among others.
With a tough competition ahead, Shaquille imperial still believes that this team can battle it out as long as they keep their focus and develop further their teamwork and chemistry.
"Siguro teamwork namin and trust each other need namin talaga yung isat isa mag focus sa team kasi anlalakas nang mindanao teams kita naman natin sa line up. Kailangan na namin kalimutan yung champion kami sa visayas back to zero kami para mag focus sa up coming visayas mindanao leg," added Shaquille Imperial.
